A Stately Cultured c 1935 Terrestrial Globe by Rand McNally with accompanying Atlas

$485.00
The refined elegance of this stately model integrates a Pre-World War 2 terrestrial sphere with a handsome turned baluster base and a rich walnut foundation slotted to accommodate the companion atlas in a most unusual fashion, where the mount of the sphere appears to be independent of the atlas residence but is uniquely combined to create this exceptional piece.  The artifact shares an abundance of history of world in the grips of the Great Depression which can be supplemented by the cultural geography of Rand McNally's 1934 World Atlas and handbook. A complete and splendid accoutrement to any office or well appointed library, providing that special element of subtle elegance and intellectual exploration. The sophisticated pairing offers stylish Art Nouveau details in the offset arm combined with the rich warmth of the walnut baluster turned base and atlas residence.  The craftsmanship is evident throughout the piece with special attention to the curved panels on either side of the atlas residence designed to allow an easy withdrawal of the atlas.  The orb itself is beautifully preserved with a satin finish and monochromatic tones of green and gold, providing a perfectly aged patina.   : The globe consist of a hollow metal orb with a paste overlay covered in twelve, satin paper map gores and offset mounted on an ornate metal arm atop of a tuned baluster base that is connected to a slotted walnut base.  The Rand McNally World Atlas (copyright 1934) is offered in a textured brown cover and has an envelope on the back to store the accompanying "The Globe Handbook for use with Rand McNally Indexed Globes".  The height of the globe is 20 inches.   The artifact has been well preserved with only nominal soiling and some very light scuffing, resulting not in loss of map but a layer of shellac revealing the truer color of the orb (near the top).  The turned baluster does have a crack and some loss of finish. (See photo).  The baluster and atlas residence have scuffing, age appropriate.  The Atlas has toning to the pages but all are intact and some wear to the binding edges as well as some looseness. The handbook has toning and the previous owner's name in pencil.   The age of the Globe has been determined by the political borders displayed, which are as follows: Europe is shown in its borders prior to WWII. Austria has not yet been annexed by Germany (1938). The Islands of Cyprus and Malta are shown to be under British control. The Irish Free State is displayed with Dublin as its Capital. Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia are shown as independent countries rather than as a part of the USSR. Middle East-Asia: Persia has changed to Iran (1935). Palestine is shown instead of Israel (ch 1948). Jordan is called Transjordan.Instead of Indonesia the Netherlands East Indies are shown. Today’s Malaysia is shown as the Malay States. Thailand is still shown as Siam. The area of Manchuria in China is shown as Manchoukuo and occupied by Japan. (1932-45). Korea is shown as Chosen and also under Japanese occupation. Colonies are displayed as follows: French West as well as Equatorial Africa, Angelo-Egyptian Sudan, British, Italian and French Somaliland. Tanganyika Territory and the Belgian Congo are shown; Rhodesia is divided into North and South. Italian East Africa is not yet listed as such (1936).   $ 485                                    SKU: D1014RMNATLAS30
