1940 Nautical themed Rand McNally with Art Deco Glass Base and unusual WW2 Map

$498.00
This artifact is a beautiful representation of the Art Deco era with its magnificent black base made of glass. A tiered step design provides a look of sophisticated elegance with the black glass offering a beautiful contrast to the green-golden oceans of the map and the bass finished meridian. The superb map of this globe offers nautical artistic details in addition to political display. Paying homage to the great explorers of the seven seas, uncommon golden colored oceans show ships of the past, from Viking vessel and sailboats to frigates. The cartouche is in form of a shell, surrounded by a Mermaid and Poseidon (or Neptune?). No doubt this attractive artifact romanticized the era of great Explorers by displaying the routes and vessel of Columbus (Santa Maria), Caption Cook (Resolution) and more. Certainly an interesting map for any nautical history buff! The map on this globe shows the struggle of globe makers keeping up with the constant change of political borders during WW2. A close look at Europe reveals a cost-effective approach by Rand McNally, there is an overprint detectable. The area of Austria and former Czechoslovakia shows a milky colored overlay, hiding previous borders and making it look as part of Germany instead. Germany annexed Austria in 1938 and occupied Czechoslovakia in 1939 respectively. This technique did not turn out to be as efficient as hoped and halted within a year. Instead, Rand McNally eventually followed Replogles' lead by issuing coupons with each globe, offering replacement gores once the war is over and final borders have been declared. We will provide a facsimile copy of the Rand McNally catalog advertisement for this model, named the Scout. Description: The Globe orb is made of hollow spun tin, covered with 12 hand applied paper gores. Capitols of each country are identified with stars. Some of the Sail ships displayed are historic, such as Captain Cook’s Resolution and Columbus' Santa Maria. The cartouche is surrounded by a mermaid and Neptune (or Poseidon?). A full meridian made of metal is removable from the fork, which connects to the glass base. The base is made of black Depression glass in a classic Deco tiered step design. Diameter of the orb itself is 12 inches with a total height of about 17.5 inches. The Globe itself is in good condition for its age. It offers a nicely aged patina with a very warm look. Scuffing is very minimal, no loss of map. Some spotting throughout. Details are crisp, colors are vivid. The entire mounting is in good condition, no cracks but some pitting to the metal part of the fork holding the meridian. With this artifact we will provide a facsimile copy of an original catalog advertisement for this specific model. The age of the artifact is based on original catalog archival and political borders displayed, which are as follows: Europe: Germany has annexed Austria (1938) and occupied Czechoslovakia (1939). Asia: The Manchurian region of China is occupied by Japan and re-named Manchukuo (1932-45) Africa: Italian East Africa is present, which existed for only a few years (1936-41) An exceptional piece documenting original history! Well packed this nautical artifact will ship for $18.00 domestic, $56.00 international. $498 — Item #: 813RMcNBLBS39 - SOLD
