1942 W&AK Johnston for Nystrom World War 2 This spectacular classroom artifact is a piece of history demanding attention wherever displayed. The globe would be suspended from the ceiling and elevated through a pulley system. . Rarely obtainable, this model is complete with pulley system and lead counterweight, which represents the moon. We are also able to provide a facsimile advertisement, identifying the structural arrangement so it can be replicated. No doubt this complete suspension system is one of the most desirable pieces, rarely obtainable and a perfect addition to complete an aficionado’s collection! The map on this orb is simplified, a classic display for classrooms, providing basic geographical knowledge. The perfectly aged patina provides the perfect vintage look. Displaying a world of 1942, one can still view the mysterious Constantinople in addition to its new name Istanbul. The effects of the German Reich’s expansion are well displayed as it has annexed Austria into its Empire. Former Czechoslovakia is unusual displayed as part Bohemia (German occupation) and Slovakia. About the manufacture: After having spent several years in the field of education, A.J. Nystrom founded his company in 1903 in Chicago. A partnership was formed with W. & A.K. Johnston of Scotland to print and supply the gores for the Nystrom Globes. The partnership specialized in simplified maps and unique globes such as the suspension model and the slate globe for the educational market. Nystrom is still producing school equipment to this day as a division of Herff Jones. Description: The sphere consists of 12 individual hand mounted paper gores over a 12 inch diameter plaster orb. Colorings have a beautiful warm appearance and nicely aged patina, despite irregular spotting. The cast iron mounting offers a rotating swivel to be suspended at. In good condition with age appropriate rubbing and scuffing. Some un-even spotting-soiling. Colors are vivid, details crisp. Mounting is in superb condition. The lead moon is also in good condition. We have not assembled the pulley system but all parts are present. Well packed, this artifact will ship in 2 boxes.
