A 1930s Impressive School Globe by Nystrom & WAK Johnston of Edinburgh (Scotland)

$495.00
Dominant in size with a 16 inch diameter, this masterpiece will be noticed in any setting. The warm coloring of the map refines the simplified elegance of this majestic Globe. Due to its massive size, the orb was made of hollow spun metal, rather than pasteboard or plaster. Covered with 12 individual paper gores, representing a rather simplified map, the legend does not present political borders but rather focuses on physical features as mountain ranges, rivers, plains and more. The refined map making skills of W7AK Johston of Edinburgh, Scotland are evident throughout. As mentioned prior, this globe is quite massive in size and weight, with a 16 inch diameter (very rare), total height of 25 inches. Originally a school globe, this artifact does show some “scars” obtained through its past 70+ years. Very minor soiling and scuffing is present throughout; the brown spots are oxidized metal of the orb itself. One can say the globe offers the perfect vintage look. About the manufacture: After having spent several years in the field of education, A.J. Nystrom founded his company in 1903 in Chicago. A partnership was formed with W. & A.K. Johnston of Scotland to print and supply the gores for the Nystrom Globes. The partnership specialized in simplified maps and unique globes such as the suspension model and the slate globe for the educational market. Nystrom is still producing school equipment to this day as a division of the Heff Jones Corporation. $495 — Item #: 1011NYSTR30S - SOLD
