A fine example of superb craftsmanship, this model offers an exceptional, heavy cast-iron base with ornate Art Nouveau details with a victorian flair . The map speaks of Empires of an era long gone and showing metropolitan centers of the past like the metropolitan city of Constantinople, connector of the eastern and western world. The Bolshevik Revolution is in full swing, Petrograd has become Leningrad while Russia as a country is still documented as such, it is just a few months before it succeeded to its new name for the next 75 years: USSR. The ever so delicate engraved map is a testament of English map maker GW Bacon & Co as it displays more than traditional details like political borders and capitols. It clearly marks cold & warm currents and seasonal isothermal lines in addition to: Length of a degree of Longitude along each Latitude circle Circumference of each Latitude circle Distance through earth (diameter) of each Latitude circle A fine decorative, object de art, offering rich in earth science detail and history. Description: The globe itself is covered with 12 individual, hand applied paper gores over a plaster orb. It is mounted dowel style onto the cast iron base. The elegant base offers very ornate, sophisticated details as the map a finely etched, detailed map published by GW Bacon of London for Weber Costello. Both manufactures are identified on the label. Diameter of the globe is 8 inches with a total height of 14 inches. Condition: Overall well preserved with some minor scuffing throughout and circular rubbing exposing the plaster in the southern hemisphere. Colors are rich, details crisp. Patina has aged to perfection. Minor corrosion to the cast mount. The age of the Globe has been determined by the political borders displayed, which are as follows: Europe is shown post WWI borders.Leningrad is already shown instead of Petrograd (changed 1924). Russia has not yet changed into the USSR (1926). Constantinople is shown instead of Istanbul (1930). Persia has not yet changed to Iran (1935). Arabia has not yet become Saudi Arabia (1932). The area of Manchuria in China is not yet re-named Manchukuo and occupied by Japan. (1931-45). The State of Central Australia, which existed from ONLY 1926-31 is not yet visible.
