The map of this globe offers beautiful artistic details in addition to political display. The uncommon golden colored oceans show ships of the past, from Viking vessel and sailboats to frigates. The cartouche is in form of a shell, surrounded by a Mermaid and Poseidon (or Neptune?). The mounting includes a base made of milky glass with deco details. It is a reflection of the shortage on metal during the war and creativity of replacement materials of that era. This globe, even or maybe because its imperfections offers a nice ambiance in just about any setting. The map on this globe shows the struggle of globe makers keeping up with the constant change of political borders during WW2. A close look at Europe reveals a cost-effective approach by Rand McNally, there is an overprint detectable. The area of Austria and former Czechoslovakia shows a "milky" colored overlay, hiding previous borders and making it look as part of Germany instead. Germany annexed Austria in 1938 and occupied Czechoslovakia in 1939. also visible is Italian East Africa, which existed for only a few years, from 1936-1941. This technique did not turn out to be as efficient as hoped and halted within a year. Instead, Rand McNally followed Replogles' lead by issuing coupons with each globe, offering replacement gores once the war is over and final borders have been declared. We will also provide a facsimile copy of the Rand McNally catalog advertisement for this model, called the Scout. The 12 inch diameter Globe orb is made pasteboard and offers unusual, golden oceans. Capitols of each country are identified with stars. Some of the Sail ships displayed are historic, such as Captain Cook's Resolution and Columbus' Santa Maria. The cartouche is surrounded by a mermaid and Neptune (or Poseidon?). The half meridian is made of metal, offering deco details and a warm bronze and brass finish. The base is made of milky white Depression glass in a classic Deco step design. Diameter of the orb itself is 12 inches with a total height of about 17.5 inches. The Globe itself is in good condition for its age. It offers a nicely aged patina with a very warm look. Some wrinkles and soiling throughout. Details are crisp, colors are vivid. The entire mounting is in good condition, no cracks but some aging to the metal part. With this artifact we will provide a facsimile copy of an original catalog advertisement for this specific model.
