6 Inch Replogle Celestial Globe; Circa 1950s

6 Inch Replogle Celestial Globe; Circa 1950s

$265.00

Replogle made two versions of this 6 inch tin toy globe in the 1950s. They made a simplified terrestrial version and this less common celestial variant. Included with this model is a companion book about the stars.

In the 1950’s Replogle ventured out into producing a few unique tin globes, such as the Magnetic Air Race Globe Game and the Surprise Globe. These more daring and colorful models came as Replogle attempted to compete with well-known children’s tin globe makers such as J.Chein and Ohio Art. However, Replogle did not make these children’s models for very long. It is not often that a model as nice as this one comes to market, as they had to endure the destructive nature of, well, kids!

The globe is made of a hollow metal orb with lithograph map and mounted into a full meridian which is also made of metal as is the base. The entire mounting is finished in a fire engine red. The base houses the book which is well preserved. The 6 inch orb sits in a cradle base with a total height of 9.5 inches. Please see images for more details.
