4 Inch Columbus School Globe c1951

4 Inch Columbus School Globe c1951

$155.00
This small 4 inch world globe was produced for use in schools and by students. Despite its utilitarian origins, this is a stunning piece of German design; it demands attention. The map tells a story about the world emerging from the devastation of World War 2. Many countries in Europe have reappeared, renamed, shrunk, shifted or disappeared. Africa has yet to emerge from the grips of European control. While the Middle East and Asia are just beginning to come to terms with the ramifications of the end of the war. These small sized globes was made in lower numbers than the full sized models and are harder to find as a result. The 4 inch schülerglobus will look great surrounded by larger models and is destined to quickly become a prized piece of any collection. We have personally obtained this artifact from Berlin and our proud to offer it to our customers the world over. The cartouche of the School Globe reads as follows: COLUMBUS SCHÜLERGLOBUS COLUMBUS VERLAG - PAUL OESTERGAARD K.G. BERLIN - STUTTGART Description: The orb is covered by 12 hand-mounted individual gores and two polar calottes. The map identifies political borders, capitals and major cities, and major bodies of water. The orb is mounted onto an aluminum bracket and half meridian that sits atop a Bauhaus fruitwood base. Diameter of the globe is about 4 inches with a total height of 8 inches. Condition: The globe is in very good condition. It offers a nicely aged patina. Minor scuffing and only minimal soiling around the Arctic Circle. There is one cut in the map over western China, but it does not distract from the look. Colors are pure and details are crisp. The meridian is in fine condition and the base is exceptional. Please see pictures for details. The age of the globe is based on political borders displayed as well as political statements on the artifact itself: Europe: Poland, and other Central European countries have reappeared on the map after the close of World War 2. Former countries of the Cold War like Yugoslavia are visible. Israel is newly formed as well. Asia: Korea has not split into North and South. Iran is still labeled Persia, but this is common for German globes despite the name change in 1935. Africa: Libya is shown as independent (1951) but the vast majority of the continent is still under Colonial rule. Well packed, this globe artifact will ship within Europe for $9. Shipping outside of the EU will be $19. SOLD $155 — Item # 1016COLSC51
