c 1919 French Globe Lamp by G. Thomas

$225.00
This petite globe lamp from French maker, G. Thomas, has an impact far beyond its diminutive size. The cartography has been distilled down to only the most pertinent details and colors to ensure legibility at this small scale. They developed the right mix of color, detail, text, and information. The presence of Petrograd (1914-1924) and an independent Finland (1917) and Poland (1918) help determine the oldest possible dates for the lamp. British East Africa has not become Kenya (1920) cementing the age as 1919-1920. It was an era that saw great changes as Europe pulled itself from the destruction of the Great War and the world headed into an unprecedented age of excess.   Description: The 3 inch diameter orb consists of 12 individual, hand applied paper gores over a heavy steel orb. Delicately engraved map details include countries, capitals and large cities, along with major bodies of water. All text is in French. The cartouche in the Pacific Ocean reads: GLOBE TERRESTRE - G. THOMAS - Editeur - Paris. Mounted onto an elegant baluster turned and ebonized fruitwood base, the globe stands roughly 5 inches (12.5cm) tall. The original twisted cloth cord is present and features the original on-off switch and european plug. The lamp is very heavy as a result of the steel orb.   Condition: The lamp is a well preserved artifact that is rarely on the market. Details in the map are crisp and the colors rich. Minimal scuffing although there is minor soiling on the map as can been seen in the photos. There are two dents side by side in the Atlantic Ocean. Base is also very well preserved, no cracks or splits. The cord, switch and plug are in safe working condition although it is probably wise to have them checked-replaced by an electrician. Globe will ship from Europe for $19.00 to most countries. SOLD $225 - Item 1016THOMLAMP19
