A fine c 1967 terrestrial Globe & Clock Desk Display Placing a whole new spin on the term “world clock” this fabulous mid century desk accessory surely creates the immediate “Mad Man” effect wherever displayed! Minimalist and streamlined, this object displays classic Bauhaus Design features. We indeed imported it from Germany, the birthplace of this style. The exquisite brass-encased clock is marked Mercedes and identified to be made in Germany. The casing is very heavy, a sign of a high quality object! With a map representing the world of about 1967, the globe adds political features of up most interest: The Cold war era. Made by the well known globe maker Columbus ensures a very detailed display an a sphere made of highest quality. The globe consists of 12, hand applied paper gores and two polar calottes, mounted into a brass, non-numeric half meridian. Mounted onto a blond, solid wood base, this artifact is a truly fab display of understated elegance! The age of the globe has been based on the political borders displayed, which are as follows: Europe: Even though it’s the Cold War Era, the map incorrectly displays a pre WW2 Germany with part of Poland being German. Germany is not yet split into East and West. Middle and Far East: Israel and Pakistan are identifies (1948 & 1947)Muscat and Oman are shown as two separate countries (Merged 1970 to become Oman)Kuwait is independent , Yemen and South Yemen shown separate. Africa: Major changes have occurred as most colonies have gained independence as new nations. Uganda, Algeria and Kenya is displayed (1962-63). Rhodesia and Botswana are shown (1965-66) but French Somaliland is still visible (Afars and Issas 1967). Description: Clock is marked Merzedes and made in Germany. The framed face is 3 inches x 3 inches. It is mounted into a brass stand that allows it to be tilted. The stand is attached to the woodedn base. The globe has a diameter of about 4 inches and offers and exceptionally detailed map of the cold war era. Mounted into a half meridian with minimalistic features, also finished in brass as the clock is.. The artifacts highest point is at the globe at & inches . The base is 12 inches long and about 2.75 inches wide. Condition: Overall a very fine display, the artifact has typical wear for its age. The brass has some wear, the base some scuffing. The clock is in working condition, but the alarm is not. On the globe details are crisp, soiling is minimal.
