This 16 inch Denoyer-Geppert Celestial Globe is a superb example of the mid-century modern design style, combined with outstanding craftsmanship. Majestic in size, bold in design and highlighting the Space Age Era, this magnificent piece is a rarely obtainable Object. The Adler Planetarium of Chicago has the same model as part of its collection, given by Mr Denoyer and Mr Geppert personally to celebrate the Grand Opening of the museum in 1956.
As a desirable collectable piece, this model (also dated 1956) can be found at the Globe Museum of the National Library of Austria and the Whipple Museum of Scientific Instruments (part of Cambridge University) in the UK. This celestial sphere is a true artifact, to be part of one’s exceptional collection.
About the Manufacture:
Denoyer-Geppert was created in 1916 by Otto E. Geppert and L. Phillip Denoyer, both former employees of W. & A.K.Johnston of England. The manufacture specialized in school globes, but did offer models for the home. The company ceased to exist as a globe manufacture in the 80’s when Rand McNally purchased its assets. Today the remaining part is called the Denoyer-Geppert Science Co and produces human anatomy teaching models.
Description:
The 16 inch globe is made of molded fiberboard with a lacquer finish. The map identifies constellations, nebulas, stars and more in a geometric, scientific rendering, a departure from its figurative celestial compatriots. This type of celestial rendering speaks to the budding technology that came about as a result of WW2. The base is made of solid wood and features a printed Horizon Ring with an overlay of veneer. The entire Globe can easily be removed from the base. Felt strips inside the base provides protection and allows for easy spinning of the orb. Total height is 22.5 inches. Total diameter, including horizon ring is 21 inches. This is a very large globe!
Condition:
The Globe is in very good condition. There is one light scuffs, a small crease and a tiny hole but no loss of paper. Colors are rich and warm, details are crisp. The mounting is also in very good condition, with little wear. The horizon ring is also in excellent shape.
This is a very large artifact. Well packed it ships for $50.00 domestic as it requires two boxes. Global shipping possible, please inquire for a quote to your destination
