Everyone was obsessed with who might win the Race to the Moon in the mid 60's. This tin globe bank plots all the American and Soviet milestones leading up to the first manned lunar mission. Surveyor 1 in early 1966 is the last mission documented. The bank is also noteworthy as it still does not have the dark side of the moon documented! The Moon, manufactured by Replogle Globes, is a fantastic snapshot of the days leading up to the Apollo missions. A smattering of probes and soft landings have occurred, but the last of the dark side has yet to be mapped out. The Cold War is in full swing and the moon is about the biggest prize to be had. The orb is made of hollow spun tin with a lithographed map. Diameter of the orb is about 6 inches with a total height (including base) of 9 inches. The orb is mounted in a half meridian and sits atop a simplified base. The globe is in excellent condition with virtually no dings or scuffs; colors are brilliant, details crisp. The plug at the bottom is present and the original key is also included. The base does have some left over tape residue. A great lunar bank for any space fanatic!
