A fine Abel C. Klinger c1890, showing the Earth at a time of exploration
Many blank spots have yet to be discovered. Neither polar region has been conquered. Interior areas of several continents still unknown lead to speculations of what may be found. Many European Nations are racing to colonize pockets of the world rich in metals and agricultural products.
A small, yet significant world of the past, made by Abel C. Klinger of Nuremberg, Germany. A company that had been producing Globes since the 1700’s, which is evident in the superbly detailed map of this petite terrestrial sphere with its elegant baluster turned and ebonized base, even containing a miniature functional compass.
The orb is constructed of pasteboard covered with 12 printed, individually hand mount paper gores and two polar calottes. The orb is mounted in a titled axis rod pressed into a turned wood column and base with flush mounted functional compass. Total ht is approx 8.5” and the diameter is 4”
The globe is in very good condition with only minimal wear and light scuffs to the varnish and some minimal wear to the ebonized base.
The age of the globe has been identified by the political borders displayed: German colonies are displayed in Africa, Panama has yet to gain independence, the antarctic region is largely undefined. Rhodesia is not yet labeled.
