1890 Schedler with dated cartouche This specific model offers an exceptionally delicately engraved map, identifying the world as it were over 123 years ago. Some of the political displays slightly contradict each other though this artifact is dated on the cartouche as 1890. Discover a world of the past, elegantly displayed in an Art Nouveau styled base. This fine object of desire offers not just a lecture into history but also a beautiful display of understated elegance. Refined details of the cast iron base pay homage to the Art Nouveau movement. It is rare to find an artifact that actually has a dated cartouche as it is to this day an uncommon practice in globe making. The cartouche identifies H. Schedler, who stepped into his father's footsteps and took over the company in 1880. An ever so delicately engraved map offers the world of Great Empires dominating the world. The Austro Hungarian Empire is visible, though the Metropolitan Budapesht is still shown as Pesht. In Africa one can view the discovery of Lake Albert, not realizing this is in fact two lakes (and later named Lake Edward. Additional Empires include Russia, China, Germany and the Ottoman Empire. Much is still left for discovery but the wonders of new technology are shown, including the first under water telegraph cable by Maury, connecting North America and Europe for its first instant communication (1865-68). Also mentioned is a French cable. The legend of the ever so delicately engraved map also displays -Lines of regular Steam Communication around the world - which refers to postal shipping and -Lines from and to Europe -. A young United States shows a divided Dakota yet not named South Dakota. Some states are not yet present including Oklahoma. A fine piece for the historian, ensuring hours of discovery of the past. Description: Diameter of the orb is 9 inches with a total height of about 14 inches. The orb consists of pasteboard and plaster, covered with 12 individual, hand applied paper gores representing the map. Mounted into a metal full meridian, finished in black and gold. The meridian is attached to a baluster turned and ebonized wooden connector, which in return is attached to an ornate art nouveau cast iron base with playful details. Overall well preserved, there is some rubbing and soiling to the map. The beautiful patina has aged slightly uneven. The base is free of corrosion. Please see photos for details.
