Small German Terrestrial Globe c 1905
Small German Terrestrial Globe c 1905
$345.00
Empires of the past, including the British, the Russian, the Austria-Hungarian and the Ottoman are shown to have conquered the world. Infamous 19 and early 20 century Metropolitan centers including Constantinople, Christiana and the Russian Czar’s St. Petersburg are visible while the imperial colonization of Africa is clearly marked by German, French, British and Portuguese dominance.
Norway and Sweden are shown as independent countries (1905) although Congo State has yet to become a “Belgian Colony” (1908). The Ottoman Empire is well visible throughout the Middle East and along the Red Sea in Africa.
This anonymous globe is quite an attractive piece and will make a prized addition to any collection.
Description:
The orb itself is covered with 12 individual, hand applied paper gores representing the map and attached to a simple turned wooden base. Diameter of the globe is 4 inches with a total height of about 8 inches. The text is all in German and shares aesthetics of several contemporary German globe makers although this has been left unsigned. Most likely, Columbus-Heymann-Schotte were contracted by a smaller maker to produce a limited run of this globe. I've reached out to the Globe Museum in Vienna for additional information.
Condition:
This artifact is well preserved. Detail of the map are crisp, colors rich and warm. Some minor scuffing near the Arctic Circle and minimal soiling throughout. The compass is missing from the base although the paper portion is present (see photos).
While this elegant artifact may be petite in size, it is grand in history.
Well packed, this model will ship to the US for $19.
