This was the beginning of the end of most Empires. Once ruled by an Elite few now facing the revolution of the common man. Emperors, who had divided the World among themselves, now had no new land to conquer. Instead, the only way to expand one's territory was through the horror and brutality of war.
Politically one of the most active eras, as at no other time terrestrial globes capture the birth and death of so many empires and nations.
This is also the era of technical advancement, as the first electrical illuminated globes appear. New materials, such as aluminum and bakelite are being introduced. This and new print technologies provide the opportunity to produce globes more economically, for every household and school. From kitsch to true pieces of art, the diversity of globes of this era is immense.

An exquisite 1921 dated Relief Globe, German Art Nouveau
An exceptional find, this German globe exemplifies the skill of globe making. A relief globe is a model with raised mountains to demonstrate the depth and height of the earth\'s surface in a three-dimensional manner. Originally created in the early 1800\'s for the blind, their popularity grew quickly within the geography educational market. It required exceptional skills to create such globes, as each model was made by hand. First the globe received the traditional flat paper gores representing the world. Then a secondary map consisting of molded paper was mounted on top, perfectly aligned with the original map. Unfortunately, by 1960 this labor intensive craft eventually gave way to plastic molded globes.

According to the manufacture (and verified by the Globe Museum of the National Library of Austria), this model was inspired by the sculpture depicting the Ancient Greek Titan Atlas holding the heavens, a 45 foot tall statue located in Rockefeller Center, New York. A classic imperialistic piece,the map identifies colonies of European Empires throughout the world. It does so by outlining each colony with the same color the Colonist is shown. For example, France is shown in purple as is its colony French West Africa. Italian Somaliland is shown in the same gold as Italy. Effects of the treaty of Versailles are documented as the Austro Hungarian Empire has fallen and given way to the birth of new nations, such as Romania, Hungary, Yugoslavia and more. What was once the great Prussian Empire has now lost domain, as part of it belongs now to a new country called Poland. The short lived independence of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania between the two World Wars is documented. The mysterious Constantinople can be found on this exceptionally detailed legend.

The globe consists of 7 horizontal sections. When taken apart, each section represents a continent containing puzzle pieces in various colors of Bakelite with raised letters. Most pieces represent countries; some are regions (as of 1927). All pieces are present; this is a rarely obtainable complete set. When assembled, the orb has a six inch diameter. Including the cast iron tripod base, the artifact is 10.5 inches tall.

A handsome 1929 Dietrich Reimers Erdglobus with dated cartouche
Dietrich Reimers was one of the most prolific German Globe makers of the 19th and early 20th century. In 1852 the firm of Carl Adami & Co, Berlin was taken over by the publishing house Dietrich Reimer (1818-1899) who employed the talents of the highly innovative Heinrich Kiepert, a well known Geographer and Cartographer at the time. This foundation and then partnership establish the company of Verlag Dietrich Reimer as one of the very best within the globe making industry. A Rare 1937 Mang's Terrestrial Globe
Mang had a passion for perfection, which is evident on this globe, as it offers quite a refined map, rich on information and color. After Adolf Mang passed, Prof. Dr. Stricker continued the tradition of manufacturing terrestrial globes. However, the company became a victim of WW2. Due to the short life span of this small company, not many globes have been produces and even less survived to this day. A desirable piece among globe collectors.

Admiral Byrd obtained celebrity status during the exploration as he would broadcast his discoveries weekly on the radio.
