A 1961 Britannica promotional Globe
by Replogle
This fab 12” model was a
complimentary gift by Britannica if an entire Encyclopedia
set was purchased. Instead of the standard Replogle cartouche,
the Globe displays the Britannica emblem.
The mounting of this Globe is a
superb representation of the Mid Century Modern design style,
blended with retro features. The map offers black oceans
rather than the more common blue/green in addition to chrome
finished mount with retro accents.
This model is displaying the political
borders of 1961, as it shows the United Arab Republic (1958-61),
a venture between Egypt and Syria, which lasted only a very
short period. Since the legend of this model no longer identifies
French West Africa (dissolved in 1960) it simplified the
task of identifying the age of the Globe.
A fine piece showing a very specific
glimpse in time.
The globe is in good condition.
Light pitting and oxidation to the chrome hardware and base.
Several slight scuffs and nicks with several small water
stains.
