A Spectacular Representation of
the Machine Age/ Art Deco Movement.
One of the rarest models to be found,
this 1938 illuminated glass globe is simply stunning. Its
clean, “stream lined” metal base offers a fantastic
contrast to the black oceans and bold colored lands of the
globe. When illuminated, the globe offers a wonderful rich
and warm glow.
Electric illuminated glass globes
were produced for only a short period, from the late 1920’s
to the late 1950’s, when economically more affordable
and less labor intensive plastic replaced the glass globes
with hand mounted paper gores.
However, within that short period
some of the finest globe models had been produced, including
this one. A similar model (with green oceans) is owned the
Globe museum of the National Library of Austria.
With this globe we will also provide
a copy of the original patent for the mounting design.
The hand blown glass globe is covered
with 12 individual paper gores. Oceans are in black, land
is shown in gold, green and orange tones. The orb is mounted
into an unusual cast iron base with stream line design and
dark silver finish. The globe can be illuminated with a pull
chain. Diameter of the globe itself is 10 inches with a total
height of about 13.5 inches.
This model has been well maintained
and is in overall superb condition. The light is functional.
Colors are brilliant, details crisp. When illuminated, two
small scuffmarks, the size of pinholes are visible. Otherwise
a splendid model
The age of the globe has been identified
by the political borders displayed:
Italian East Africa is visible; Austria
has yet to be annexed by Germany.
