A fine, dated example of the
German Biederrmeier design Style, a1928 Dietrich Reimers
terrestrial Globe.
The Biedermeier name applied
to a period of European culture and a style of furniture,
decoration, and art originating in Germany in the 19th
century. It is believed to have been named for the worthy,
bourgeois-minded "Papa Biedermeier," a character
published in a satiric Munich magazine.
Biedermeier designs were often
elegant in their utilitarian simplicity. Light-colored
native fruitwoods were typically used, with contrasting
bands of black lacquer often effectively substituted
for the costly ebony of Empire pieces. The style in
its stylized simplicity has been cited as a forerunner
of Art Deco, Bauhaus and other modern design movements.
Note the detailed and beautifully
colored map and the dated cartouche. It was most uncommon
to have a print date as on this model. Terrestrial spheres
made during war time occasionally display a date to
show advancement of military troops, though 1928 was
post WW1. The Globe does identify former German Colonies
which were given up as part of the Treaty of Versailles.
This Globe is a superb and
valuable addition to any collection, based on the fascinating
political display and elegant design.
The orb is constructed of pasteboard
covered with 12 printed, individually hand mount paper
gores and two polar calottes. The orb is suspended via
axis rod in a stamped brass half meridian. The meridian
is mounted onto an attractive wooden stand as described
above. The Globes stands approximately 25” Tall
overall and is 13” Diameter.
The Brass meridian is tarnished
as expected from age with no attempts made to restore
it's original luster. The meridian is without cracks
or breaks. The wooden stand has several light scratches
and scuffs commiserate with it's age. The are no cracks
or breaks to the wooden stand. The original varnish
on the mapping has aged nicely lending to the rich colors
of the globe. There are some abrasions and scuffs to
the orb perhaps indicative of the harsh environment
it survived during a particularly tough era in Germany,
lending to this globe's substantial character.
