A Rare c1925 John Paul Goode Library
Globe in Duncan Phyfe Style
This beautiful statement of
past craftsman’s skills offers a perfectly aged patina
of warm golden land and mellow green oceans. The map displays
famous metropolitan areas of the past such as Constantinople
and the Ottoman Empire. The mounting consists of American
Walnut. It’s flowing lines and slender legs makes
this globe of unrivaled beauty and a classic in Duncan Phyfe
style.
Goode was a professor at the University
of Chicago department of Geography. He became known for
his unique version of projecting a round sphere to a flat
map. The intent was to improve upon the distortion visible
in the Mercator's projection. His proposed replacement for
the Mercator's projection became know as Goode Homolosine
Projection, though the creation never gained wide acceptance.
Goode later worked with Rand McNally
to create Maps and Atlases and around 1924 and put into
production several models of globes. They did not see mass
production numbers like the more common Rand McNally version
and only a couple have turned up on the market in recent
years. The cartography style is unique to the Goode globe
and not merely an overlable of an existing Rand McNally
Globe. Rare.
12 hand mounted paper gores mounted
onto hollow metal orb. The 16 inch diameter orb is mounted
into a Brass meridian which may rotate within the cradle
at any angle. The meridian sits upon a small roller mounted
within the wooden cradle which permits easy rotation. The
cradle is mounted atop a The Duncan Phyfe style tripod Base.
The horizon ring displays miles, kilometers which can be
used by rotating the globe into position thereby making
it possible to quickly determine a distance between any
two points. The ring also displays the signs of the zodiac.
The globe stands 38 inches tall overall and is approximately
21 inches wide at the horizon ring. The globes oceans are
an olive green with beige landmasses. The political bordered
are boldly colored beneath the aged original varnish.
There is minimal wear to the sphere with only a few scuffs
to the varnish primarily. The base is generally in good
condition with some noted wear near the feet.
The approximate age of the globe
has been determined by the political borders and Cities
displayed: Persia, Constantinople, Russia, Oslo are Visible.
Due to the large size of this
globe, it will be shipped in two large boxes and will be
limited to North American destinations.
