A 9” Hammond’s Terrestrial
Globe, displaying the political borders of c 1930.
Note the superb Art Deco/ Nouveau
design of the mounting, showing strong influence of the
Jugendstil movement of Vienna!
Colors of the map have a nicely aged patina. The warm earth
tones provide a beautiful contrast to the teal finished
cast iron mounting.
It is interesting to note that while most Globe manufactures
were located in Chicago, C.S. Hammonds & Co produced
their Models in New York, Brooklyn and Boston (as stated
on the Cartouche).
The Globe itself is made of hollow
spun metal, covered with 12 printed paper gores. The cartouche
is printed on the gore, not applied afterwards as it was
common during that period. Orb mounted in it's original
heavy cast iron art deco style base. The mounting's original
oxidized copper teal finish beautifully intact.
Some scuffs and light wear. Aging
to to the varnish. No cracks or breaks to the mounting
The age has been identified by
the display of Istanbul instead of Constantinople, Manchuria
is not yet occupied by Japan. Persia is displayed and Arabia
