Pre - 1914 Globes

The 15th to 19th century was the era of great explorers, from Columbus and Amerigo Vespucci, Magellan and James Cook to Lewis and Clark, Amundsen and many more.

Driven by the human quest to discover and conquer, these men and women ensured for the blank spots on the globe to slowly vanish.

Each globe of this era is a true testament of courage, as it displays the newest discovery of its moment in time.

 

   

A Splendid c 1908 Trippensee Tellurium

As a refined scientific instrument, this tellurium allowed to introduce eager student to the basics of our Universe by reproducing the motions of the solar system. Such devices had become popular during the 17th century, following the publishing of Sir Isaac Newton’s universal theory of gravity in 1687.

C Abel Klinger 4" c1890

A small, yet significant world of the past, made by Abel C. Klinger of Nuremberg, Germany. A company that had been producing Globes since the 1700’s, which is evident in the superbly detailed map of this petite terrestrial sphere with its elegant baluster turned and ebonized base, even containing a miniature functional compass.

Jan Felkl, Prague 8.5" c1870

An early table globe by Felkl in Czech language, the simple mount suggests this model to be a student globe. Jan Felkl was one of the most successful globe makers of the late 19th century. This globe is one of the rare Jan Felkl Models which pre-dates Jan's sons partnership - in 1870 the company was re-named J. Felkl & Sohn and relocated to Roztok.

Rand McNally 18" 1894

This Globe is a fine and large example of superb craftsmanship. Attention to detail is evident throughout the mounting. Note the glass ball footing encased by eagle claws and splendid Art Nouveau lines with a copperized finish. The perfectly aged patina of the map provides a warm glow. The legend documents Empires one can only read of in History books today.

C. Adami 13" Dated 1901

A stunning 1901 C. Adami tableglobe with an ebonized and baluster turned column and plinth base. It offers a beautiful warm patina and is a highly desirable collector’s piece as it had been refined by Heinrich Kiepert. Kiepert, the “Wunderkind” of mapmakers in his time, was well known for his incredible refined cartographic skills and is to this day highly appreciated in collectors circles.

J. Lebegue, Paris 13" c1909

This fine Lebegue terrestrial Globe is a testament of superb craftsmanship. Note the detailed, beautifully colored map and ornate mounting, which perhaps may not be politically correct by displaying the faces of three human races. Empires such as the British, the Austria-Hungarian and the Ottoman are shown to have conquered the world.

Dietrich Reimers Erdglobus, Dated 1910

Reimers was one of the most prolific German Globe makers of the 19th century. The map of this splendid aged piece of history speaks of an era long gone, filled with empires, kingdoms and the birth of early democracy. The attractive detailed mounting with enclosed compass demonstrates the classic German attribute of attention to detail. A masterpiece throughout.

Ludw. Jul. Heymann Erd-Globus c1907

A fine and large example of superb craftsmanship with beautiful and well preserved coloring. Each color identifies a colonist nation and their conquered territories throughout the world. Superb attention to detail by the globe maker is evident throughout the map. A truly superb masterpiece when it comes to globe making.
