Jan Felkl , Prague 8.5 “ c1870
An early table globe by Felkl in Hungarian
language, the simple mount suggests this model to be a student
globe. Jan Felkl was one of the most successful globe makers
of the late 19th century. By 1873 he produced as many as 15000
globes a year in 10 different languages for schools throughout
Europe. However, the globes are quite rare. Not considered
worth preserving, the globes were eliminated when outdated.
Historically significant, this particular globe is one of
the rare Jan Felkl Models which pre-dates Jan's sons partnership
- in 1870 the company was re-named J. Felkl & Sohn and
relocated to Roztok.
Composed of 12 paper gores hand applied
onto a plaster sphere with plain mount and ebonized baluster
turned fruitwood base. Approx 18” Tall, 8.5” Diameter
The globe is in good condition considering
the nature of abuse school globes sustain. Abrasions and age
toning, professional restoration to the base's foot. A 1"
hairline crack at the equator is visible to the northeast
of Australia.
