A sophisticated mid century modern
statement by Columbus, 1961.
This globe was designed and hand-crafted in a very limited
edition, celebrating the 50th anniversary of Columbus Globes
(1909-1959).
It is a true masterpiece in design
and technology of its time. The globe has a Duo map. Only
when illuminated, the legend reveals ocean depths in addition
to the regular display. Invented by Paul Oestergaard Jr.,
that technology is the most imitated design in the Globe Industry
to this day.
Only the most affluent society of
post war Germany could afford this model with a price tag
of 5000 German Marks, the equivalent of what a small car sold
for. To own this globe
was luxurious and a true sign of prosperity.
At 45 inches height and 28 inches
diameter, this globe is indeed impressive. The solid wood
base with walnut veneer has true mid century modern lines,
accented by the precision engineered, solid aluminum hardware.
The printed paper gores are hand mounted onto a massive glass
orb . It will make a statement in any setting.
Due to the re-discovery and rising
popularity of the mid century modern style, Columbus revived
the design and is offering a similar yet inexpensive variant
constructed of plastics and other budget materials.
We have personally obtained this
Globe from the original owner in Germany and imported it to
the US. Considering the limited production and affordability,
we doubt there is a second model available anywhere in the
US. If you are looking for an exquisite and sophisticated
statement, this globe is for you. An heirloom for generations
to come.
The picture of Mr. Oestergaard (owner
of Columbus Globes) with the globe is included in the sale.
With the exception of minimal scuffing,
the map is in very good, crisp and clean condition. At the
footing of the base some small pieces of the veneer have chipped
off. The globe comes with its original German wiring. We will
provide a plug converter at no additional charge.
Due to size, the globe will be crated
and shipped via freight.
