A spectacular example of the Art
Deco/ Machine Age movement!
The clean streamline,
almost minimalist design features of the mounting makes this
piece to be a favorite among Deco as well as Mid Century Modern
collectors.
While most Globe manufactures were
located in Chicago, C.S. Hammonds & Co preferred the East
Coast of the US, in Brooklyn and later expanding into New
York and Boston.
The orb is covered with
12 individual paper gores. The cartouche is printed on the
gore, not applied afterwards. This indicates the gores to
have been printed in the US, not imported (as it was common
in the 1920’s and 30’s) from England. The mounting
consists of a hollow aluminum half meridian with black detail
and a black stepped bakelite base, featuring silver details.
Approx 14.5 Tall, 12" Diameter.
In good condition with
age appropriate rubbing and scuffing .Colors are vivid, details
crisp, some uneven aging of the patina. The mounting is in
excellent condition with only minimal wear.
The age of the globe
has been identified by the political borders displayed: Persia
is displayed instead of Iran (chg. 1935). Manchuria in China
is shown to be occupied by Japan and shown as Manchuokuo (1932-45).
